When Nicola Cockell, the Read Easy Coordinator in Barnstaple, visited Sidney and Richard recently to see how they are getting on with their weekly reading sessions, she discovered that Sidney was having trouble with his eyes, probably as a result of his diabetes. Sidney has been told by his doctor to monitor his blood sugar carefully and has been considering how his diet should change to help.
Unfortunately, as Sidney struggles to read, he cannot read all the labels at the supermarket to make sure his sugar intake stays low. He would also like to cook more but cannot follow most recipes yet. Richard and Nicola are going to try and find ways to help Sidney understand more about food in the weeks ahead, using their reading sessions in a very practical way.
Sidney has made a great start with his reading and both Richard and Sid seem to be enjoying themselves immensely. This is great news. We will keep you posted of his ongoing progress, both with reading and the positive effects this will have on managing his health and well-being.
