Read Easy Hackney
About our group:
Thank you for visiting our page!
We are the first London Read Easy group, working within the London Borough of Hackney.
We hope you’ll find all the information that you need here, but if not then please do contact us on one of the numbers above and we’ll get back to you just as soon as we can.
Learn to Read
1:1 coaching takes place twice a week for 30 minutes per session in a safe and semi-private space. You must be over 18 years of age and have a good standard of spoken English. We provide all the reading materials you need and the service is completely free.
If you, or someone you know, lives in Hackney and would like to learn to read then please do get in touch with Chris on the number above and she’ll be happy to take you through the application process.
Become a Coach
We are always in need of volunteer Reading Coaches. You do not need to have any teaching experience, but kindness, understanding, patience and perseverance are key.
Training is delivered through a one-day workshop, following which you will be matched with a Reader to meet with twice a week for 30 minutes at a time. A further one-day consolidation workshop will take place a few months afterwards.
We provide all the materials that you need and offer regular support throughout.
Helping someone to read is an extremely rewarding task, so if you live in Hackney and this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please do contact Serena on the number above.
We rely on your generosity and that of our volunteers to make Read Easy a possibility. Any donations are gratefully accepted and can be pledged here: www.chuffed.org/project/reh
Currently, we pay commercial rates to hire a venue for our full-day training sessions (which happen 4 x a year, usually in March and September/ October). If you might be able to offer us a free or low-cost space in Hackney, suitable to host up to 20 people, we’d be very glad to hear from you.
