About our group:

Read Easy Hackney will be recruiting new Reading Coaches from January 2021.

Thank you for visiting our page!

We are the first London Read Easy group, and have been in operation in the London Borough of Hackney since affiliating to Read Easy UK in March 2018. In July 2020, Read Easy Hackney registered to become a small charity  (Charity no. 1190737). We recruit, train and support volunteers to work one-to-one with adults who wish to improve their literacy. Currently (November 2020), we have 25+ Reading Pairs working together.

We hope you’ll find all the information that you need here but, if not, please do contact us on one of the numbers above and we’ll get back to you just as soon as we can.

Learn to Read

One-to one coaching takes place twice a week for 30 minutes per session. You must be over 18 years of age and have a good standard of spoken English. We provide all the reading materials you need and the service is completely free.

If you, or someone you know, lives in Hackney and would like to learn to read then please get in touch with Chris on the number above and she’ll be happy to take you through the application process.

Become a Coach

To become a Coach, you do not need to have any teaching experience, but kindness, understanding, patience and perseverance are key.

While the Covid-19 pandemic continues, the Reading Coach training is taking place online in two sessions (both lasting approximately 3 hours each) which are delivered a week apart by RE UK’s experienced Trainers. After this Initial Training, you will be matched with a Reader and ‘meet’ with them twice a week for 30 minutes at a time. (Currently all Coaching is taking place online/ remotely). Further Consolidation Training follows a few months later.

We provide all the materials that you need and offer regular support throughout.

Helping someone to read is extremely rewarding, so if you live in Hackney and this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please contact Cheryl. (Contact details are at the top of this page.)

Join the Management Team or become a Coordinator

Read Easy Hackney is overseen by an enthusiastic and committed management team, all of whom are volunteers. The team is made up of 9 members and we meet (currently on Zoom) eight times a year at monthly intervals, with the exception of January, July and August. Our next AGM will take place in June. From time to time, we have vacancies in the management team. We are currently looking for a Fundraiser to succeed the current volunteer from March 2021.

Coordinators are the frontline volunteers who support the Reading Pairs and report monthly to the management team. As the group increases its reach across the Hackney, we will require an additional Coordinator.

If either of these roles are of interest, or if you are interested in finding out about what is involved in being a management team member, please get in touch with Serena. (Contact details at the top of this page.)

Support Us

We rely on your generosity and that of our volunteers to make Read Easy Hackney a possibility.  Any donations are gratefully accepted and can be pledged here: www.chuffed.org/project/reh
