Read Easy UK is a CIO registered with the Charity Commission. It is an umbrella
organisation which supports volunteers to set up local Read Easy groups in their own
communities
• Read Easy Leeds, as the name suggests, works to support people wanting to learn
to read based in the Leeds Area – our, and your, local community
• Read Easy Leeds was formed during lockdown by a passionate English teacher who
saw the need to assist people, who for many different reasons had reached the age
of 18 without being able to functionally read, with all the disadvantages and
exclusions this brings.
• We have a locally based management committee with backgrounds in education,
business, law, health, libraries and the third sector who bring their experience,
expertise and commitment to Read Easy Leeds
• We are all volunteers – our management committee, our coaches and our
coordinators give their time and expertise freely
• We are not yet a registered charity as our turnover does not require us to register as
one but, if we grow as we want to, then we will become a charity. We operate in
accordance with the requirements of a charity and have been accepted by HMRC as
being able to recover gift aid on donations
How we operate
• We provide free, confidential, one to one reading coaching from our trained
volunteers • Our coaches and readers meet twice a week for 30 minute sessions
following a well -established, phonics based reading programme devised by the
Shannon Trust
• Coaches and readers meet in a local approved venue or, post pandemic, sometimes
remotely
• We work confidentially – the confidential nature of what we do is vital to people
coming forward and wanting to work with us. Many adults, embarrassed by not being
able to read, have developed coping strategies to hide their situation even from family
members which makes our one to one confidential coaching relationship vital
• We encourage direct approaches from people wanting to learn to read. Read Easy
has an increasingly high profile publicity campaign including TV and radio features
• We have built relationships with organisations throughout Leeds such as Leeds
Libraries, Linking Leeds Social Prescribing Service, DWP, Local Housing
Associations, Community Centres, Local GP surgeries, Leeds College of Building,
LCC Job Shop, Employment Advisors (Reed in Partnership and Maximus) in addition
to Third Sector organisations such as ‘Voluntary Action Leeds, St. George’s Crypt,
People Matters, Women’s Lives Leeds, The Hamara Centre and White Rose Dyslexia
Support all of which refer readers to us.
