Read Easy Tower Hamlets began in 2022 with a small team of volunteers. It now has more than 20 dedicated coaches helping adults within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets learn to read.
Tower Hamlets has been identified as having the second lowest literacy rate in England; over 18,000 adults within the borough have poor reading skills.
We have a steady stream of learners joining our waiting list and we urgently need compassionate coaches from throughout the borough to join our team.
Our reading coaches come from all walks of life. No teaching experience is necessary as we provide full training and support. All you need is patience, kindness and an interest in helping others.
Struggling with reading can be isolating, shaming and hold people back from realising their true potential. When a reader unlocks this vital skill their world opens up, their confidence grows and they believe they can do things they had only dreamed of before.
Our coaches volunteer an average of 2-3 hours per week. They meet one-to-one with their reader and work through a set programme at their own pace. Taking a reader through the workbooks can take 6 months to 2 years. Our coaches say watching their readers graduate gives them enormous pride and satisfaction.

● Team Leader: If you’re inspired to lead others and be part of a genuinely transformational charity, then why not volunteer with Read Easy and use your leadership skills to guide and support a team of local volunteers. You will manage meetings, set agendas, network within your local community and be a passionate spokesperson for your local group. This is a hugely important role in the Management Team, and you will be responsible for the overall direction of the local group. This role will appeal to people who are motivated by managing a team of diverse volunteers, and by the challenge of ultimately helping hundreds of adults in their community who can’t read.
● Coordinator: As a Read Easy Coordinator you would be meeting and enrolling adults who want to learn to read and interviewing volunteer Reading Coaches with a member of the Management Team. You would then pair them up and offer ongoing support throughout their reading journey, visiting their reading sessions occasionally and maintaining support through regular calls with both Reader and Coach to check all is going well.
● Referrals Networker: In this vital and interesting role within our Management Team you will create and develop relationships with local agencies, such as Job Centres, social services and many others who may be able to refer potential readers to the group. This voluntary position will suit people who thrive on networking and making new connections. The impact our local groups make is down to securing a steady stream of Reader referrals, so you will play an instrumental part in making sure your group thrives.
Read Easy groups are financially independent from Read Easy UK, and we are responsible for raising all the money needed to keep our group going. If you would like to support our work, you can donate here.
