Jess contacted Read Easy with an interest in helping adults who were struggling with their reading. As a Postgraduate student in Speech and Language Therapy, Jess had an interest in this area and our work appealed to her. Jess, along with a fellow student, worked tirelessly as a Pioneer to help us start a Read Easy Team in Central Manchester.  The group have since been achieving tremendous results.

As a Pioneer, the role involved raising awareness of Read Easy and the support offered to adults who are struggling with their reading. Jess promoted Read Easy amongst potential volunteers and also agencies and organisations who would support our work in the future. The outcome is that we now have a very successful Read Easy group offering support to adults in the area of Manchester Central and North.

Jess says ‘ I was slightly daunted by the role of Pioneer but could see the need to help ReadEasy UK get a team up and running. The support and resources on hand enabled me and my co-pioneer to follow a tried and tested process and we found many individuals and organisations across the city who were very keen to support us. The cause resonates with so many.’

On a personal level, Jess says ‘I am very proud of all I have achieved in my roles with Read Easy – first as a Pioneer then as the new teams’ Secretary and Deputy Team Leader. I have really enjoyed my time with Read Easy.’

Having successfully graduated Jess has moved on from the team to travel but remains very enthused by everything Read Easy offers adults who want to learn to read and hopes to join another Read Easy group on her return to the UK – in whichever town or city she settles.

"The support and resources on hand enabled me and my co-pioneer to follow a tried and tested process and we found many individuals and organisations across the city who were very keen to support us. The cause resonates with so many."
